First of all, make a list of all your needs like car parking, dishwasher, washer dryer, closets or anything that you need. Decide what is the size of the apartment you would need to fit all your belongings comfortably. Things to look for when renting an apartment is not just about the benefits or amenities in the apartment but also details like how far is the nearest hospital, how close is the school, what type of neighbors are there or what common utility bills you would be expected to pay.
Once you have the checklist, check for ads and start visiting the apartments. Make sure it is a good neighborhood. Absorb all the details as you enter the locality and even before you see the house. See how easy or difficult it is to reach there.
If you have kids, then look for a house in a good school district.
See what kind of local access you have nearby like train stations, bus stops and airports. See if there are supermarkets and libraries within walking distance. Community parks also matter.
Also, check who your immediate neighbor would be. This would allow you to figure out when you and the neighbors can live in harmony without causing each other undue stress and strain. There is no point if you have to live next to a bunch of college students who are going to party all night long as you are trying to ensure that you and your kids get a decent night's sleep.
